Weekend Quick Cryptic 35 - Berried by Johninterred

My fellow TimesforTheTimes contributors Phil Jordan, Sawbill and I are continuing to produce Quick Cryptic crosswords to fill the gap left by the Saturday Times not having one. The plan is for us to take turns, publishing one a fortnight, and this week it's my turn. There is a theme hinted at by the title that may need a bit of explanation. It is based on the terrible pun that is my username and a related homonym... read the hints and tips for more.

You can find a link to the crossword here and the answers below. Feel free to leave any comments or questions here as you would do on TfTT. Before looking at the answers, if you would like some additional help, click the label below.
Some hints and tips:

  • When people have deciphered my user name johninterred = john buried = john in Bury, they usually think I live in Greater Manchester. But I don't. I live in East Anglia (Bury St. Edmunds). Now the thing is, here in East Anglia, the town I live in is pronounced to rhyme with "Ferry", i.e. "Berry" which leads to the thematic answers to some of the Across clues. But in the NorthWest, the town is pronounced to rhyme with "Furry", like the verb meaning to put in a grave. Hence the down clues have a few thematic answers related to burial. Yes, I know it is groanworthy, but I hope it makes you smile rather than grimace.

  • 6D gives the unifying theme.

  • There are a couple of attampts at deceptive definitions which may need a little tateral thinking - 18D and 23D.
